Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter Aisle Crane Replacement

Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS) can produce up to 110,000 tonnes of nickel matte each year. When it needed remedial work to comply with Australian standards, downtime was not an option.

Providing engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) ser-vices, Tetra Tech Proteus reviewed existing building conditions, assessed what structural changes were needed and liaised keenly with the KNS team about options and timing for the remedial work.

A new aisle crane and modifications to its supporting structure was needed and, as a brownfields site, the crane and structure could make only a small footprint. Tetra Tech Proteus’ detailed planning around options and KNS operating schedules reflected our close communication with the client.

We were then able to implement and project manage the agreed approach. Work was done to schedule and without any incidents to be recorded.
